As we continue to move forward with the beginning of school, we’ve had many questions about virtual learning and how this will be conducted for the 2020-2021 school year.

LCM will offer students the option of In-Person Learning or Virtual Learning next year. The virtual option will require very specific and time-driven requirements for students to be counted as enrolled and present.

• In-Person/Face-to-Face Learning – regular school hours with students assigned to a specific grade or course. Students will participate in structured learning with the teacher in the classroom setting.
• Virtual Learning – instruction that does not require having the instructor and student engaged in instruction at the same time.

o Grades PK-12

o To receive credit and be counted present the student must:

▪ Make daily progress in the learning system each day

▪ Make daily progress via teacher-student interaction each day

▪ Complete/turn-in assignments daily

o Students may be required to log into the classroom setting on various days as part of the daily assignment.

o The instructional time requirements for Virtual Learning will vary for each grade

level or course but expect the amount of time to complete the required daily assignments to be a minimum of 180 minutes per day for grades PK-3 and

240 minutes for grades 6-12.

If a student does not participate in In-Person Learning or make daily interactions and progress through the Virtual Learning platform the student will be counted absent for the day.

A student must be “present” 90% of the time to receive credit for the grade-level or course. Students who do not actively meet the requirements of In-Person or Virtual Learning to receive credit will not advance to the next grade level. Compulsory Attendance requirements were waived by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) last year but will not be waived for the 2020-2021 school year.

LCM CISD offers enrollment for students that do not live in the district through Limited Open Enrollment (LOE) with tuition. Tuition will continue for LOE students for both In-Person and Virtual Learning platforms.

Students who live in the district and choose virtual learning are not required to pay. All students in Virtual Learning will need accessible technology, Internet service, or cell data to access the curriculum requirements.

Students will also be required to participate on the chosen instructional platform (In-Person or Virtual Learning) for a minimum of six weeks.

There are specific courses with the requirement of In-Person Learning to be enrolled in the course. These courses require hands-on and specific skill-based demonstrations for the student to demonstrate mastery of the required curriculum (e.g. CTE courses such as welding).

We know and understand these options are going to be very challenging for the student, parent, and the District. We want to work with you, our parents, to offer the learning platform of your choice while maintaining a high-level of student learning and success.

You will receive a letter of commitment form from your child’s campus next week, on which you will select your child’s learning platform choice for the 20-21 school year.

We understand your many frustrations as requirements continue to change rapidly as we deal with COVID-19 and the new challenges it presents. We do appreciate your willingness to work with us through these many “unknowns” as the school year approaches. As always, our goal will be to offer your child the very best education and learning platform to continue their success through the school year and beyond.
