Shooter faces attempted capital murder charge

A man is in custody after shooting at a deputy earlier today.

Joshua Sykes, 37, is currently in Orange County Jail.

The initial charge was aggravated Assault on a Public Servant, 1st degree Felony. The charge has been amended to Attempted Capital Murder, 1st degree Felony.

A warrant has been secured on the new charge.

According to a police scanner, a man fired shots at a deputy at approximately 2:14 p.m. on Wednesday.

Around 2 p.m. the Orange County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to a man brandishing a firearm along the 7200 Block of Highway 12.

Upon arrival, the Sykes fired several rounds. One round struck an Orange County Sheriff’s Office Vehicle. No one was injured.

State Hwy. 12 between Farm to Market Roads 1132 and 1136 were closed in both directions for almost three hours until Sykes was apprehended.
