COVID-19 and the closing of Orangefield ISD’s school facilities are changing the way our teachers provide instructional services. OISD has prioritized areas of services for the well-being of our students and staff. Our three main areas of priority are to ensure that our students and staff are safe, our students are fed, and our students continue to learn. OISD’s Flexible Education Program (FEP) provides a safe means for our teachers and students to provide and receive instructional services during the duration of facility closures due to COVID-19.

There are three guiding principles OISD will follow as we provide students and families with quality educational resources. They are as follows:

Principle 1: Provide equitable access.

Principle 2: Provide quality resources for all ages, grades, and placements.

Principle 3: Provide resources for enrichment, not as requirements.

FEP Guidelines and Resource Distribution (subject to change depending on duration of facilities closure)

The FEP plan below details how OISD will act on the three principles to provide continued instructional services. Teachers will utilize the guidelines below to provide quality instruction for all learners. The assignment and distribution of student work will be differentiated based on campus, grade, and subject. To ensure that all assignments are equitable, PK-12 student assignments will be provided as a printed resource. In addition to the adopted instructional materials, Google Classroom and Remind will be used as resources for instruction and communication platforms. Instruction is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, March 25, 2020.

Each campus will have an assignment pick-up location on Wednesday-Friday, March 25-27, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. All assignments will be returned when learning resumes in school buildings. If additional days are needed to pick-up assignments as well as a specified date to return assignments, they will be announced accordingly.

Returning and Grading of Assignments

The returning of paper-based assignments will be determined at a later date. Web-based assignments will be administered through Google Classroom.

Teachers Attempting to Call Student Homes

Parents if you get a call from a blocked number or a number you do not recognize, it could be your child’s teacher. Many of our teachers will be calling their students to check on them and see if they need any assistance.

Elementary teachers will contact students in their homerooms

Junior High teachers will contact students in their 6th period classes

High School teachers will contact students in their 3rd period classes

Free Student Meals and Distribution

OISD students that were 18 years of age and younger (21 years or younger for students receiving special education services) on September 1, 2019, are eligible for free meals. Beginning Monday, March 23, 2020 meals will be distributed via drive-through at the Orangefield Junior High campus, free of charge.

Those meals can be obtained Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Upon arrival, students will receive a lunch meal for that day and a grab-and-go breakfast meal for the following morning.

Student with Disabilities

OISD will ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to educational opportunities during an emergency based school disruption. This aligns with our guiding principles of equity, quality, and enrichment. Parents of students who receive special education services will receive a letter from the OISD Office of Special Programs with more information.

Advanced Placement (AP) Students

Students taking AP courses will continue to complete assignments provided by their classroom teacher. In addition, these students are encouraged to use their personal College Board account to access practice questions and released exam questions. These resources can be accessed through the College Board Website.

Dual Credit Students

Students taking dual enrollment courses will continue to follow the procedures provided by Lamar State College-Orange and submit assignments online through Blackboard.

Flexible Education Program Extensions

As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, our FEP procedures may too. Check the district website daily for updates and additional information.
