Texas State Senator Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) announced today his intention to file for re-election to the Texas Senate.

“Serving Senate District 3 is the greatest honor of my life,” said Nichols. “I humbly ask for voters’ support to continue working on behalf of East Texas. When I first ran, I pledged to work to make state government smaller, more efficient and more accountable. We have delivered on those promises, and I am excited to keep building on our record of success.”

Nichols, first elected in 2006, has a strong conservative record focused on limiting government and representing the district’s priorities. He has passed legislation to reduce spending, protect landowners, encourage free-markets and crack down on fraud.

A past city-council member and mayor, Nichols is widely respected as one of the state’s leaders in transportation policy. He has chaired the Senate Committee on Transportation since 2013, where he led efforts to increase funding for transportation – without raising taxes or fees. Nichols authored and passed legislation that will result in nearly $5 billion in additional funding for construction and maintenance projects in the next state fiscal year.

As a member of the Sunset Commission, Nichols has worked to eliminate nearly a dozen state agencies and boards, which has saved taxpayers over $160 million. He has authored legislation to reduce property taxes for homeowners and to eliminate the business margins tax.

He has been recognized as a Champion for Free Enterprise by the Texas Association of Business and a staunch advocate of the pro-life movement. Nichols has also been named a “Champion for Children” by the Texas Equity Center for his work to improve the school finance system.

“The priorities of Senate District 3 are my priorities,” said Nichols. “When people share their concerns and problems with us, we really do work to fix them. My record reflects the strong conservative values of the people I represent. It’s a privilege to again ask for their vote.”
