HUNTSVILLE — It was a “golden” day indeed for several Orange County tracksters Friday as they picked up victories at the Class 4A Region III Track & Field Championships at Sam Houston State University.

The top two finishers in each event qualify for the University Interscholastic League’s State Track & Field Championships that will be held May 11-13 at the University of Texas.

West Orange-Stark jumper Jared Dupree, who placed second at the State Meet in the high jump, made sure that he would make a return trip again this year as he won the region with a jump of 6 feet, 8 inches. It was Dupree’s second-best jump of the season, just missing his season-best by one inch.

Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s Eli Peveto continued his dominance in the distance races. Peveto ran the 3,200 meters under 10 minutes for the second time this season as he captured the title Friday by running a 9:59.28. Peveto will try to punch his State ticket in the 1,600 meters as well today in the running finals.

Orangefield Lady Bobcat Brooklyn Goldsmith qualified for State for the second straight year as well in the pole vault. Goldsmith did it with style in Huntsville as she soared to a personal best vault of 11-3 to place second, smashing her previous best and Southeast Texas leading 10-6 by nine inches.

Orangefield’s Bailee Click tied her season-best jump of 5-4 in the high jump to finish second and qualified for Austin. Click went 5-4 at the District 22-4A Championships.
