Special to The Leader
Orange Christian Services will host a volunteer organizational meeting for The Field of Plenty Donation Community Garden. On Thursday, July 28, at 6:00 p.m., the first organizational meeting will be held at Orange Christian Services. If unable to attend at that time, a second organizational meeting will be held on Thursday, August 4, at 9:00 a.m. at OCS. Opportunities for volunteers to get involved with the garden will be discussed.
The Field of Plenty is located behind Orange Christian Services on Wickard Street. In spite of the extra wet spring, progress has been made at the garden. Six hundred and ninety-seven pounds of potatoes were dug in June and donated. The property is fenced and raised beds are being built. Currently, we have okra, purple hull peas, and pumpkins planted. Garden hours for the summer have been set for every Thursday between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m.
A T-shirt fundraiser has been setup with TruColors, The Field of Plenty’s Garden Partners. You may call TruColors at409-883-3223 to order one or more T-shirts to help support the garden. The T-Shirts sell for $15.00. No minimums required.
Ten raised beds are being built. Each bed is roughly a hundred square feet of planting space. If you would like to support the garden through a bed sponsorship, these are being sold for an initial fee of $250.00 and a yearly renewal fee of $100.00. Bed sponsorships supply the materials needed to build the bed and to maintain the soil and seed each year. A sign will be posted on each bed with the sponsor’s name. Volunteers who sign up to work the garden will plant and maintain the sponsored raised beds. The Field of Plenty’s seasonal garden plans for which vegetables are to be planted will be determined by its garden advisory committee.
