Sen. Nichols and Congressman Babin meet with local officials regarding flooding in SE Texas

ORANGE — Senator Nichols and Congressman Brian Babin met with officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Orange County, the City of Orange and the City of West Orange on Thursday to discuss the recent flooding which has affected much of Southeast Texas.

“I am grateful and appreciate the help of first responders from all across Texas who have come to Southeast Texas to help with this tragedy,” said Senator Nichols. “My office will continue to work with our first responders, local government officials and state agencies to ensure this area receives the assistance they need.

Currently, there have been approximately 2,000 FEMA claims filed, one claim is filed per household. There were 1,000 claims in Orange County, 900 claims in Newton County, and 50 claims in Jasper County.

“I commend all of our state and local partners, especially our first responders, for their incredible response to this extremely challenging situation,” Babin said. “My staff and I have been working closely with everyone involved and will continue to do so to ensure the victims are getting the resources and attention they so desperately need. While the recovery effort will certainly be a difficult road ahead, our office will be there to help each step of the way.” U.S. Rep. Attendees included Senator Robert Nichols and JD Hale, County Judge Brint Carlton, Commissioner Barry Burton, Pct. 2, Commissioner David Dubose, Pct. 1, Commissioner Jody, Crump, Pct. 4, Sheriff Merritt and his Chief Deputy John Tarver, Jay Trahan-Director of Economic Development for City of Orange, Shawn Oubre-Orange City Manager, Mayor Pete Runnels of Pinehurst, along with his city manager Robbie Hood, and Chief of Police Fred Hanauer.

“My office will continue to work with first responders, local government officials and state agencies to ensure residents of Southeast Texas can rebuild their community after these floods,” Senator Nichols said.
