Vidor Clubs honoring loved ones

Special to The Leader

The Vidor Rotary Club and the Vidor Lions Club have combined forces for a beautiful new tradition.  For years, the Rotarians have hosted Flags on Main Street, in which businesses (not only on Main but all over Vidor) purchase flags to be placed at their businesses on seven holidays. These are Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Patriots Day (September 11) and Veterans Day.

The Rotarians, along with their friends in the Vidor Lions Club, have added a new flag program in the Lions’ Veterans Park by Interstate 10.  For $50 a year, patrons may have a flag displayed along with a sign in honor or memory of a loved one. The person being honored does not have to be military.   The flags were displayed Monday on Presidents Day for the first time, and were quite eye-catching, drawing more traffic than usual to the Veterans Park.

“We will continue to accept sponsorships throughout the year,” says Vidor Rotary Club President Karen Tipton.  “The next flag holiday is Memorial Day in May, so folks have a little while to get their flag money turned in so the signs can be made.  We hope to have all fifty flags sponsored buy caring Vidorians or others, and we hope to have to order even more.  This is wonderful way to recognize someone.”

Flag forms are available from Sally Andrews by emailing sandrews@vidorisd.org, or posting on the club’s Facebook page that a flag sponsorship is desired. Andrews may also be reached at 409-651-8390.
