Bears down Pirates in OT

LITTLE CYPRESS — Getting huge effort inside by Katon Brown and a nice outside game from Keegan Sonnier, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears were able to topple the Vidor Pirates 70-68 in overtime at The Bear Cave in non-district action Friday night.
Brown worked his magic inside and crashed the boards as he poured in 20 points and snagged a amazing 21 rebounds.
Sonnier, meanwhile, totaled a game-high 21 points and grabbed five boards as the Bears (2-2) were able to withstand a feisty Vidor (2-2) unit that was not phased on the road.
The Pirates led 61-59 with 0:10 seconds remaining in regulation. However, LC-M guard Ayson Simmons, who finished with 10 points and six rebounds, calmly drained two free-throws to tie things up to send the contest into the extra session.
Sonnier hit a big three-pointer, his fourth of the night, to put the Bears up 64-61 in the extra session. Brown made it 66-61 with a rebound and putback as LC-M controlled it the rest of the way.
Vidor’s Maverick Quirante hit a three-pointer at the end of the game to make it a two-point margin.
Quirante led the Pirates with 13 points.
Vidor guard Ty Morgan contributed 12 points and seven rebounds. Will Fawcett had 12 points and five boards. Gavin Lacy filtered in eight points to go along with a team-high 10 rebounds while Drake Carter added eight points and five rebounds.
Andrew Daspit contributed eight points and nine rebounds for the LC-M cause while Jacolven Provost added six rebounds.
The Bears controlled the boards, finishing with a 52-39 edge.
LC-M had 18 turnovers while the Pirates finished with just 11.
The Bears finished 13-of-22 from the free-throw line while Vidor connected on 13-of-18.
Seven different Pirates scored in the first quarter as they were able to snare a 18-11 lead.
LC-M bounced back with a 23-13 spurt in the second quarter to go up at halftime 34-31.
Sonnier hit two three-pointers in the second quarter while Brown scored six points.
The Pirates answered by outscoring the Bears 18-12 in the third with Quirante bruising his way for six points.
