Lady Stangs stroll past BC; await playoffs

WEST ORANGE – Even though they had already clinched second-place in the District 24-4A volleyball race, the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs played like they are ready to make some noise in the Class 4A Region III playoffs.

The Lady Mustangs had everything working for them Tuesday night at home as they closed out 24-4A play with a sweep of the Bridge City Lady Cardinals 25-7, 25-17, 25-19 at Mustang Gym.

The Lady Mustangs (9-3 in 24-4A) had their service game working against the Lady Cardinals (4-8 in district) all night as they notched 15 aces.

Senior Aaliyah Teel paved the way for the Lady Mustangs as she notched a match-high 16 kills to go along with six service points and four aces.

Ja’Tayiah Vital had five kills for WO-S while Elasha Colbert contributed four.

The Lady Cardinals struggled against the Lady Mustangs’ serves throughout the match. WO-S had eight aces in Game One.

Elecia Barlow served up 12 points and four aces for WO-S. Gabby Robinson had 12 points and an ace. Phillis Jones totaled eight points and three aces. Natiyah Brumfield had five points and two aces and Olivia Basinger collected five points and an ace.

Kaitlin Thayer led the Lady Cardinals with six kills. Reyna Owens had four kills while Carlie Fults and Madison Caraway had three kills apiece.

Olivia Bass led Bridge City with five service points while Hope Hill had four points and an ace. Fults and Abby Faulk each had three points and an ace.

The Lady Mustangs rolled out to an 11-2 run in Game One and never looked back. BC got to within 21-7 but WO-S closed with the last four points.

The Lady Mustangs broke away from a 12-12 tie in Game Two by going on a 8-0 run to go up 20-12 and then coasted to the win.

Game Three was tied at 5-5 but the Lady Mustangs broke away with a 7-0 spurt to go up 12-5.

The Lady Cardinals scrambled back to get to within 17-13 before WO-S closed it out with a 8-5 run.
