Pirates rally to sink GCM, 27-24

BAYTOWN — With just 11 seconds remaining in the game, the Vidor Pirates turned to their passing game and with that, came a crucial 27-24 District 22-5A road victory over Goose Creek Memorial at Baytown Stallworth Stadium Thursday night.

Pirate quarterback Kolbie Humble teamed up with tailback Haylon Leckelt on a six-yard touchdown pass with 11 ticks left to enable the Pirates (3-4, 2-2) to sneak off with a big road win over the Patriots (3-4, 1-3).

The Pirates finished with 356 total yards, 338 via their tough ground game.

Leckelt finished with 129 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Pirate fullback Blake Rowe muscled his way to 124 yards and a touchdown off 18 totes.

Trevor Duff rushed for 57 yards on eight carries. Humble had 28 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown and completed 2-of-2 passes for 18 yards.

The Patriots finished with 320 total yards, 171 in the air and 149 on the ground.

Stephen Adams led the Patriots with 69 yards on 10 carries. Deandre Herman had 58 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries and completed 2-of-4 passes for 99 yards and a score.

GCM receiver Myles Duke hauled in three passes for 120 yards and a touchdown.

The Patriots snared a 10-0 lead at the half.

GCM received a 27-yard field goal by Hector Trevino with 0:38 left in the first quarter. Herman made it 10-0 with 4:47 left in the half when he scooted in from a yard out.

The Pirates managed to trim the margin to 10-6 in the third when Leckelt broke loose on a 25-yard touchdown dart.

Vidor managed to snag the lead with a Rowe one-yard score to make it 13-10.

However, Herman followed up with a 29-yard touchdown gallop to give the Patriots a 17-13 edge.

Humble put the Pirates up 20-17 by taking it in from a yard out with 11:56 remaining.

The Patriots answered with a big flurry when Herman connected with Duke on a 79-yard bomb to give the Patriots back the lead at 24-20 with 11:37 remaining.

The win really helped the Pirates keep their playoff hopes alive as they will welcome the Beaumont Central Jaguars to Pirate Stadium next week while the Patriots visit Lumberton.
