ORANGE — PlayPower LT Farmington has been awarded a contract for a new playground at Sunset Park on 16th Street in Orange.

The playground will be for ages two to 12 years of age and will be ADA compliant with a ramp for containment borders.

The $41,024 was included in the 2015/2016 fiscal year budget.

The contract will include equipment, materials and installation of the new playground.

“This also includes the removal of the old equipment,” Director of Public Works and Engineering Department James B. “Jim” Wolf said during the Tuesday morning council meeting.

Council Member District 2 Dr. Wayne Guidry said his family utilizes the park often.

“Could we move the funds to next years budget for a nicer set,” Guidry asked.

City Manager Dr. Shawn Oubre said it could be an option.

“Future improvements include extending the park,” Oubre said. “The current equipment is not safe and must be removed.”

Council Member At Large Position 5 Bill Mello said the council could not leave the park unsafe.

“I do not want to take away from the kids for one year,” Mello said.

An exact date for demolition of the existing equipment and installation of the new has not been announced.
