VIDOR — They may not be “gym rats” but the Vidor football team ran the fast break well last week in posting a crazy 83-54 win over Baytown Lee to snag their first District 22-5A victory of the season.

This week, the Pirates (2-3, 1-1) are honing in on a hungry Ozen (2-3, 0-2) team as they will welcome in the Panthers, who will make a short trek to Pirate Country from Beaumont.

The Pirates, to say the least, shrugged off their 22-5A opening 36-30 loss to Nederland by smashing the Ganders last week.

Vidor’s tricky running game totally dismantled Baytown Lee as the Pirates picked up over 700 yards of total offense.

The Pirates had four backs go over the 100-yard mark in the win.

Tailback Haylon Leckelt roughed up the Ganders with 218 yards on 10 carries. Just halfway through the season, Leckelt already has 764 yards as he and fullback Blake Rowe both look to crack the 1,000-yard mark for the second straight year.

Rowe ripped through Lee for 117 yards on just five carries and now has 553 yards this season.

Meanwhile, fellow back Trevor Duff and quarterback Kolbie Humble combined for 223 yards on just 11 carries as the Pirates rolled to the win.

The Pirate defense will look to improve this week after allowing over 500 yards to the Ganders and Ozen has an offense with plenty of speed to burn.

The Panthers are coming in limping a bit after dropping their first two 22-5A tilts, falling to Lumberton (51-29) and Nederland (34-25).

Ozen quarterback Joshua Boyd has completed 49-of-83 passes for 815 yards and seven touchdowns and has rushed for 312 yards and a TD on 65 carries. His favorite targets have been Jaydon Cunigan (14-258-1) and Travon Gipson (10-257-1).

The Panthers definitely have a feature back in Calvin Tyler, who has rumbled for 831 yards and 11 TDs on just 104 carries.

The Pirates will have a short week next week as they will travel to Baytown to take on Goose Creek Memorial on Thursday night.
