Lady Mustangs trip up Lady Bears in four

LITTLE CYPRESS – With the District 24-4A race tight throughout the first half, the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs put themselves on solid footing Tuesday night as they went to the Bear Cave and took down the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears 25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 25-16.

Senior standout Aaliyah Teel powered the Lady Mustang attack, finishing with a whopping 29 kills to go along with nine service points and three aces.

The win pushed WO-S’ 24-4A mark to 4-3 while the Lady Bears slipped to 3-4 but definitely remain in the playoff hunt with five matches left for both teams.

Teel had plenty of help from her teammates.

Shatyra Allen had one of her better hitting nights for the season as she picked up nine kills. Elecia Barlow had five kills for the Lady Mustangs while Elasha Colbert had four and Ja’Tayjah Vital three.

Maddy Frey had a superb night at the net for the Lady Bears, finishing with 14 kills. Alexis Cox contributed nine kills while Mackenzie Hearn had eight and Madison Taggert added three.

Game One was tied at 19-19. WO-S upped it to 24-22 before the Lady Bears got to within one and a Allen kill sealed it for WO-S.

WO-S scored six straight points to grab a 16-9 edge in Game Two. LC-M got as close as 17-15 before the Lady Mustangs finished with a 8-3 spurt.

LC-M broke away from a 17-17 tie in Game Three by scoring five consecutive points and then held off the Lady Mustangs.

WO-S controlled Game Four most of the way, darting out to a 15-8 cushion to walk away with the big road win.

Phillis Jones led WO-S with 14 service points and an ace. Taylor Colbert served up eight points while Olivia Basinger and Natiyah Brumfield added five apiece.

Hearn had seven service points for LC-M while Kaitlin Avery had six and Frey and Cox added five apiece.

WO-S will welcome in first-place Silsbee Friday while LC-M takes a short trip to Orangefield.
