VIDOR — On Friday night, the Vidor Pirates will be the first team in District 22-5A that will try to keep the Nederland Bulldogs away from the district throne.

That has been a hard task for all the teams in 22-5A as the Bulldogs have claimed at least a share of the district title the last four years.

Both teams are coming off their bye weeks and both will check into the contest in Nederland Friday with 1-2 marks.

The Pirates fell to Channelview 49-28 in their last game. Channelview remains a perfect 4-0 and has scored 244 points thus far. As a matter a fact, Channelview’s lowest point total of the season came against the Pirates.

Vidor will look to count on its running arsenal to slow down a potent Nederland offense.

Pirate tailback Haylon Leckelt has rushed for over 400 yards on the season while fullback Blake Rowe has responded with a little over 300 yards.

The Bulldogs will check in with plenty of balance.

Nederland quarterback Mitchell LeBaron has completed 49-of-94 passes for 644 yards and six TDs. His favorite targets have been Dean Fisher (10-17-1) and Connor Perkins (8-150-2).

Perhaps the Bulldogs’ biggest threat comes in the form of running back Austin Krautz, who has already zipped for 458 yards and five TDs on 51 carries. He also has seven catches for 89 yards.

Last season, the Bulldogs pounded out a 50-32 road victory. The Bulldogs piled up 519 total yards. Sage Seay passed for 169 yards and ran for 168 more while Krautz had 115 yards on the ground. Vidor had 360 total yards with Leckelt leading the way with 124 yards on 21 carries.

The Pirates will retun home Oct. 2 when they play host to Baytown Lee.
