BRIDGE CITY — Bridge City High School is filling up some coaching positions and the Cardinals are also losing a top-notch assistant coach.

Last week, the BCISD Board of Trustees voted to hire three new head coaches.

Kayla Gallardo will become the Lady Cardinals’ new head softball coach. Gallardo was an assistant coach at Orangefield High School last year. Gallardo had actually accepted the head softball post at Hardin-Jefferson High School in Sour Lake. She opted out of the H-J job when the Bridge City job became available.

Gallardo will replace long-time Lady Cardinal coach Miste Henderson, who resigned earlier this summer.

Henderson coached the Lady Cardinals for seven years and led the program to four district championships. The Lady Cardinals reached the postseason all seven years and reached the regional quarterfinals of the playoffs twice.

The Cardinals also picked up a new head boys basketball coach.

Larry Sterling, who has been the head coach of the Vidor Pirates the last several years, will replace long-time Cardinal head coach Tony Knight. Knight will remain teaching at Bridge City.
The Lady Cardinal girls soccer program has a new head coach in Skylar Rowley. Rowley will replace Cassie Bearden.

Also, the tradition-rich Cardinal baseball program will look to replace an excellent assistant coach in Elmer Laird. Laird landed a head-coaching job as he will lead the Sabine Pass Sharks baseball program.
