Former Orangefield resident named Officer of the Year

DAYTON, Texas — Performing life saving measures in April 2012 contributed to Corporal Shane Burleigh to be named as Officer of the Year.

Burleigh, a 1990 graduate of Orangefield High School, was named during the annual Dayton Chamber of Commerce Banquet on Friday.

“In kindergarten, the students were suppose to be working on what they wanted to be when they grew up,” Shelia, Burleigh’s mom, said. “He drew a badge.”

Jerry, Burleigh’s dad, said that Shane always wanted to be a police officer since he was little.

Burleigh said his mentor was former Constable Don Hubbard.

“Hubbard was my role model,” Burleigh said. “He sponsored me for the police academy.”

Burleigh has been at the Dayton Police Department for six years. He started as a patrol officer, before becoming a narcotics officer. He was promoted to Corporal approximately six months ago.

Administor Assistant Dayton Police Department Tamara Alexander said, “Shane is very well respected in the department.

Alexander is also Burleigh’s wife.

“I know the dangers he faces when he goes to work,” Alexander said. “I am very proud of him.
