Beauchamp named Altrusa ‘Woman of the Year’

PINEHURST — A woman with a desire to help others through years of experience as an educator and civil service was honored Tuesday for her dedication and hard work.

Theresa Beauchamp was named Woman of the Year by Altrusa International, Inc. of Orange during a special ceremony on Tuesday at Robert’s Meat Market in Pinehurst.

“I’m so honored to receive this award,” Beauchamp said after being surprised with the announcement. “To be included with these women is just overwhelming for me.”

The Altrusa Woman of the Year award is presented annual to an Orange County resident whose actions exemplify the qualities of an Altruistic woman. A luncheon is held in her honor and is attended by many of the previous award recipients.

Beauchamp retired in 2012 after spending 40 years as an educator. She spent the past several years as an assistant principal with the West Orange-Cove Consolidated Independent School District but has worked for school systems in Vidor, Bridge City, Houston and Chicago during her career.

She is currently serving her third term as a councilwoman for the City of Orange and has been a staunch supporter of the redevelopment project and riverfront project in downtown Orange.

Beauchamp is also a recipient of the Athena International Award in 2009 and was inducted into Leadership Southeast Texas (LSET) in 2006 and Pioneering Women in 2008.

Altrusa International was founded in Nashville, Tennessee in 1917, according to the official website. Members of Altrusa are united through their dedication, to develop and apply leadership abilities, to capitalize on its worldwide member network and to find partners to help us improve its communities.

The Orange chapter of Altrusa International has presented the “Woman of the Year” award annually since 1961.
