Bonds reduced for mother and son jailed for murder

EL PASO, Texas —

A 74-year-old West Texas woman and her 55-year-old son arrested in February as suspects in the 1977 slaying of the woman's estranged husband have had their bond amounts reduced.

Lisbeth and Roger Garret originally were jailed on bonds of $5 million each for murder in the death of Army Green Beret officer Chester Garret. Jail records show a judge in El Paso reduced her bond Wednesday to $120,000 and his to $500,000. They remain in custody and both have pleaded not guilty.

They were arrested after her other son, Patrick Garret, told investigators that Roger confessed to him in 1990 to hitting Garret in the head with a bat, and that their mother stabbed him several times. They loaded the body into Garret's 1972 Volkswagen and drove to a dump.
