HICO, Texas — Law enforcement officers from across the state converged by the hundreds on a small Central Texas town to pay tribute to a deputy cut down in the line of duty.
They joined friends, family and admirers in the football stadium in Hico (HYE'-koh) to mourn Hood County sheriff's Sgt. Lance McLean at his Monday funeral. McLean died Saturday, one day after police say Ricky Don McCommas shot him in the head. McCommas died in a gunfight with police outside Granbury City Hall shortly after shooting McLean.
Granbury police Officer Chad Davis, who also was wounded in the gunfight, attended McLean's funeral in a wheelchair after his release from the hospital.
Before the funeral, Sheriff Roger Deeds said he believed McCommas planned a bloody rampage when McLean confronted him.
