House budget chief: Impasse will 'get worked out'

AUSTIN, Texas —

One of the chief budget-writers in the Texas Legislature says cutting spending is an undesirable option to resolve an impasse between the House and Senate with time running out.

Republican state Rep. Jim Pitts said Thursday he is weighing options for a budget solution with just over two weeks left in the session. Gov. Rick Perry says lawmakers can't go home unless they deliver $1.8 billion in tax cuts and $2 billion for water projects.

The House and the Senate are at odds on how to do that. Budget negotiations between the chambers broke off this week and it's unclear when talks might resume.

Asked if a deal can be brokered before the session adjourns May 27, Pitts crossed his fingers and told reporters, "It'll get worked out."
