Help needed to ‘Fill the Bus’ with school supplies

VIDOR — Local residents and anyone else who wishes to help are once again being asked to “Fill the Bus” to aid Vidor students whose families are strapped this year and may not have the means to purchase school supplies.

For the past two years, VISD has parked a school bus at Vidor WalMart on the first Saturday in August, collecting the necessary school supplies from generous patrons who want to lend a helping hand. This year will be no different.

From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 3, various staff members and student organizations will be on hand to fill a VISD bus with needed items from the school supply list. Items needed include 24 count crayons, 8 count watercolors, Fiskars blunt-tipped scissors, 4 oz Elmer's glue, facial tissue, hand sanitizer, paper towels, kinder sleeping mats, paper plates and lunch bags.

Other items needed to help students include 24-count #2 pencils, 8 count map colors,

12-count map colors, 120-page wide-ruled spiral notebooks, large glue sticks, pine pearl erasers, plastic folders with pockets and brads (red, purple, blue, green, orange and yellow), Ziploc bags sandwich size, Ziploc bags quart size, Ziploc bags gallon size, handheld pencil sharpener with enclosure, pencil zipper pouch and wide-ruled notebook paper.

Cap erasers are also in demand, as is  9x12 construction paper, 9x12 manila paper, 12x18 manila paper, 50-count 12x18 construction paper, blue/black medium point pens, 5-tab colored Avery index dividers, highlighters, 2" binders, coffee filters, cotton balls, multi-purpose zipper bag, heavy duty, 11x6, chair bags (Oak Forest and Vidor Elementary students only), 8-count colored markers, 70-page wide-ruled spiral notebook and sanitizing wipes or baby wipes.

Vidor Rotary’s green bus will also be on hand to collect new or gently used jeans or jackets in conjunction with Vidor High School Interact. Folks can deliver those items to the green bus, which will be parked at WalMart with the Vidor ISD school bus.

In addition, local businesses can sponsor a window on the bus for a $100 donation. They will receive a window with their logo proudly displayed for the entire day, and the funds will go to purchase supplies that may be needed as the year progresses, or those that are not donated on Aug. 3. Sponsorships may be sent to Sally Andrews, 120 E. Bolivar, Vidor, Texas, 77662.
