Public invited to special needs softball game

VIDOR — A softball game created for a select group of students is generating a lot of excitement in the community.

The Youth Leadership Southeast Texas from Vidor High School is holding a softball game beginning at 1 p.m., Monday, May 20, at the Vidor High School softball park just off Stadium Drive in Vidor. The community is asked to come out and support the special needs students participating in this game.

“This game is going to be a lot of fun for everyone, especially the kids,” said Johnnie Andrus, organizer of the Youth Leadership Southeast Texas group at Vidor High School. “These kids need love too, and the support of the public will really make a difference. I’m hoping this game can become an annual event.”

The game is being referred to as the Special Event Softball Game and will feature at least 18 special needs students from Vidor High School. Students from Youth Leadership Southeast Texas and Vidor High School’s National Honor Society will also participate.

The game was originally scheduled to be a small, fun way of spending a Monday afternoon but has expanded into an exciting event fit for the community.

Travis Maines, the Vidor High School principal, will throw out the first pitch on Monday. Also, the participants will be wearing matching color-coordinated shirts and hats to help generate a feeling of team unity.

The game is part of a community service project created by the VHS Youth Leadership of Southeast Texas representatives.

Students are selected into the program based on community service performance. This year’s selections are Shanice Hagler, Mackenzie Andrus, Keeli Milligan and Jonathan Stevenson.

The game is expected to last until 3 p.m., Monday, and admission is free for everyone.

“The kids will get hats and shirts, plus they will be given medals following the completion of the game,” Andrus added. “It’s going to be so much fun for them and for the fans, and we want them to know they are all winners.”
