Special to The Leader
Lyons Den Comic Book and Game Store is preparing for a special event this Saturday. Free comic book day.
Lyons Den, located 365 N. Main St. in Vidor across from Sonic, will be open for “Free Comic Book Day” from noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 4. “Free Comic Book Day” is a single day event - the first Saturday in May each year - when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores. This is the 12th year celebrating comics and the first year the Lyons Den will host the event.
According to comic book distribution company, Diamond Comics, “Comic book specialty retailers worldwide expect record attendance at this year’s Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) and have also pushed their ordering to record levels—with more than 4.6 million free comic books to be available the day of the event, May 4, 2013. Nearly 2,000 retail accounts have signed up this year as participating stores for Free Comic Book Day—also a record number of participating stores—and expectations are high. Comic book publishing heavyweights Dark Horse Comics, DC Entertainment, IDW Publishing, Image Comics and Marvel Comics are among the many sponsors delivering special titles for ‘Free Comic Book Day 2013.’”
“Free Comic Book Day” is designed to appeal to a broad range of tastes, including action-packed superhero stories featuring DC’s Superman and Marvel’s Infinity title; sci-fi adventure set in the Star Wars universe; humorous comics featuring SpongeBob SquarePants and The Simpsons; and comics especially for kids and younger fans featuring The Smurfs, Sesame Street, and Strawberry Shortcake.
“We’ve got a lot of great things for our customers and the community to enjoy on that day,” said Kelly Lyons, co-owner of Lyons Den Comic Book and Game Store. “We will have superheroes like Batman, Batgirl, Wonder Woman and Catwoman handing out the free books as well as local comic creators Aaron Williamson and Danny Allain available for autographs, pictures and you can purchase some original artwork from them as well.”
Aaron Williamson is a self-taught comic book artist living in Port Arthur Texas. Aaron started his comic career as a freelance artist back in 2008 where he worked on Chameleon Studios’ flagship title; “Excendor.” In addition to his production on “Excendor,” Aaron has also worked on other properties such as “Night” (Jester Press), “Nightmare City (CCP Comics), and “The Last Great Game Show” (Iccw).
Aaron is currently working as a resident penciler and inker for CCP Comics, based out of Austin, Texas, on there up-coming medieval title, “The Knights of Albrecht,” which is scheduled to release this summer.
Comic book artist Danny Allain is a 30-year-old elementary school art teacher from Sulphur, Louisiana. He is the creative force behind the comic “Dead Reckoning.” It’s a four-issue story set in the old West with zombies of course. Issue No. 4 is due out sometime this summer. The Lyons Den carries this title.
“It’s going to be a fun time for everyone,” Lyons added. “We are trying to make this a special day and a yearly event the community can look forward to. We are also tying it into our third anniversary. We will have a major sale that day with 20 percent off on most items and 50 percent off on all Graphic Novels and Trade Paperbacks. Plus, we will be hosting a free Heroclix tournament and giving away a free Iron Man figure for the players while supplies last.”
