Vidor church collecting items for tornado victims

VIDOR —  A church with a reputation for helping those in need across the state is reaching out to its neighbors to the north.

Pastor Bruce Lockett and the congregation of First Pentecostal Church in Vidor, located at 185 Camp St., are once again helping their fellow man by collecting items to assist those in need in Moore, Okla., who suffered through a tragic tornado on Monday afternoon.

“You just want to cry when you see the videos of the devastation and how many people this has had an impact on,” Lockett said. “This has touched a lot of people, and we just want to do our small part to help. God told me to go to Oklahoma, so that’s what we are going to do.”

Lockett said the church is collecting goods to be transported to Moore, Okla. on June 3. Donations are being accepted from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., everyday at First Pentecostal Church in Vidor up until the departure.

Lockett has secured two other donation locations from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with Triangle Therapeutic at 6755 Phelan Blvd., Ste. 628 in Beaumont, and the location at 5957 Ninth Ave. in Port Arthur.

Items being requested include canned foods and vegetables, snack foods, bottled water, baby food, formula, wipes, batteries and tarps have been made a special request.

“My best suggestion is to grab a five-gallon bucket and fill it up with things you think you would need if this happened to you,” Lockett explained. “Then bring it to the church or one of the other locations and we’ll get it to the people in Oklahoma.”

Lockett said cash donations are not being accepted, but the church group would accept Walmart gift cards and deliver those to families in need in Moore, Okla.

“I’ve been very surprised at the response we’ve already had (Tuesday),” he added. “We’ve already got a truckload and it’s just the first day. There are a lot of people who are wanting to help but can’t get there to do it. We’ll take the items there and make sure they know we care and the people of Southeast Texas are here to help.”
