Vidor library to close for renovations

VIDOR — The Vidor Public Library is getting an updated look.

The Vidor Public Library, located at 440 East Bolivar, will be closed from Wednesday through Memorial Day, May 27, for renovations. The library will reopen on Tuesday, May 28.

According to Colette Turner, head librarian, the library has qualified for a Tocker Foundation Grant worth approximately $64,000 to replace shelving units, as well as to add some new furniture and features to the Vidor Public Library.

“This grant will let us replace all of the shelving in the main part of the library,” Turner said. “We have mismatched shelving, some warehouse shelving units which are really tall and some older shelves, some of which have already fallen.”

Turner said the library has been attempting to find a way to replace the shelving units for nearly four years.

She said representatives of the foundation made a tour of the Vidor Public Library and also approved the addition of several other items, such as chairs which will accommodate laptop users and slat walls for displays.

“We will even have some end-caps with slat walls, which will be for displays too,” she added.

The Tocker Foundation, established in 1964, discovered a need in small, rural Texas libraries serving populations of 12,000 or less, after years of supporting a wide range of community-based causes. In 1992 the foundation board decided to focus grant distributions in this way, and, now, the foundation partners with community libraries to meet the particular needs of the community.

Turner also said the library has also initiated an “amnesty” program on overdue library books and dvd’s. From June 1 through June 28, library patrons who have overdue materials, no matter how long they have had them, may return those items with all fees and fines eliminated. The items must be in good condition.

Any outstanding fees or fines for previous items returned will not be waived.
