Catholic Daughters of the Americas announce essay winners

ORANGE — The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Saint Cecilia #1396, recently held an essay contest honoring the Knights of Columbus, Council #1680, of Saint Mary Catholic Church, for the Knights’ 100th Anniversary.

The contest was open to Catholic school children and they were asked to write an essay using Matthew 25: 34-40 to explain how the principles of the Knights follow Jesus’ commandment to love God and your neighbor. Those principles include Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.

The winner of first lace was Spencer Johns, a seventh-grade student. Elizabeth Guillot, an eighth-grader, placed second. Third place was awarded to Cole Hamilton, also a seventh-grader. Madison Taggart, an eighth-grade student, received honorable mention.

Their essays highlighted the 100 years of volunteer service by the Knights to Saint Mary Catholic Church and the community.
