Public Hearings scheduled for housing projects

ORANGE — The Board of Commissioners Orange Public Facility Corporation is holding three public hearings on Tuesday, October 15. The first is scheduled for 4: 30 p.m. while the next two are scheduled simultaneously at 4:35 p.m. at the Gans/Lewis Administration Building located at 516 Burton Street in Orange.

The hearings are to give the public an opportunity to discuss the issuance of tax-exempt bonds along with other available funds  for the proposed Pine Groves, Velma Jeter and Arthur Robinson II projects. The developments are affordable housing family facilities.

The agenda for the meeting said the public hearing will immediately follow the Orange Housing Authority Board of Commissioners meeting scheduled at 4 p.m.

The redevelopment plans for Arthur Robinson II, Pine Grove, and Velma Jeter were approved in July of this year, giving Housing Authority Orange permission to move forward with demolition and relocation plans for low housing residents in Orange after being tabled earlier when the commissioners faced a deadlock in the vote and unable to agree to approve or fail the resolutions.

The resolutions for the Redevelopment Plans stated for the development of up to 80 units at each location. At present, only Velma Jeter is actually scheduled for 80 unites. Arthur Robinson II is excepted to have 70 units, with 35 set aside for public housing and Pine Grove will house 66 units.

The demolition/disposition application for the Velma Jeter Homes property to the Special Applications Center of the Department of Housing and Urban Development was approved by the board. The deadline for completion of the project is July 30, 2014. The residents will receive a 90 day notice as required by law.

Citizens have voiced concern for the Arthur Robinson II location at a past Orange City Council meeting.
