City of Orange could receive gift of train car

ORANGE — What do you give train depot that needs everything?

A train car of course!

The city of Beaumont contacted the Friends of the Orange Depot concerning a Pullman Troop kitchen car for the Southern Pacific Rail Road Depot near the intersection of Green Avenue and 11th Street, Orange.

The car would actually be gifted to the city of Orange and the council would need to approve and vote to gift it to the non-profit organization.

“There are steps in this process,” City of Orange  Director of Economic Development Jay Trahan said. “The city council has to agree and vote, then make it available to the non-profit. It is in the discussion phrase at this point.”

Trahan is also the Volunteer Committee for the Friends of the Orange Depot.

“This is a unique car as a troop car bringing troops to Orange to their ships,” Southeast Texas Model Railroad Club Vice President Activity Director  and Friends of the Orange Depot Board of Director member George Bohn said. “It is a unique deal. We would be the only depot with a Troop car.”

Les McMahen, museum historian and display coordinator at the DeQuincy Railroad Museum, volunteered to assist the group with setting up displays when the time came.

“I presented to the DeQuincy Board and they voted to approve loaning artifacts to the depot when the time comes,” McMahen said.

McMahen spent two years labeling and organizing artifacts at the DeQuincy Railroad Museum.

The depot’s roof was damaged during Hurricane Rita in 2005.

“Evergreen Fabrication, LLC has offered to donate the plywood and tarps to prevent further damage,” Friends of the Orange Depot President Carrie Woliver said. “I did ask that they do not use blue tarps please, so they are looking for some darker ones.”

Evergreen Fabrication, LLC is located in Vidor.

In exchange for the donation, the company requested a sign with the name and donation.

The organization is also searching for artifacts from the depot.

“If anyone has items they would like to donate, they can contact us through our website.” Woliver said.
