Filings for May elections begin today

ORANGE — Filing for a place on the May election ballot begins today across Orange County and the rest of Texas.

Candidates wishing to file for positions on local city councils, school boards, drainage district, water districts and the port and navigation district may begin filing for places on the ballot on Wednesday, Jan. 29. The filing period ends Friday, Feb. 28. Early voting for the election period is from Monday, April 28 through May 6, 2014. Election Day is Saturday, May 10.



City of Orange

An election will be held for the Single Member District 3 seat, currently held by Essie Bellfield, as well as the at-large seat for Position 6, which is held by Charles Guillory. Candidates seeking the District 3 must reside within the district, while any Orange resident may file as a candidate for Position 6.

City of West Orange

Three councilmembers have terms expiring in the City of West Orange this year.

Seats held by councilmembers Shirley Bonnin, Dale Dardeau and Mike Shugart will be open for filing beginning Wednesday. The seats are at-large position and any West Orange resident may file.

Also, the city will have the re-authorization of the its 0.25 percent tax dedicated for street maintenance on the ballot this year, and five charter amendments which council approved for placement on the ballot during Tuesday’s city council meeting.

City of Pinehurst

The City of Pinehurst will most likely have a change to its council this May as one candidate has announced he will not seek re-election.

Terms are expiring for Mayor Joseph “Pete” Runnels, as well as councilmen John D. Zerko and Ron Cowling Sr. All positions are at-large.

City of Bridge City

Four positions are open for filing in Bridge City this year.

Seats currently held by Mayor Kirk Roccaforte, and councilmembers Mike Reed, Place 2; Eric Andrus, Place 4; and Danny Cole, Place 6, will be open for filing beginning today.

City of Vidor

Vidor residents have elected many new faces to the city council over the past three years, and, this year, three seats are open for filing.

Terms are expiring for councilmembers Jay Odom, Ward 2; Jason Woodard, Ward 3; and Gary Herrera, Ward 5. Potential candidates may call Vicki Watson, city secretary, at 409-769-5473 for more information.



City of Rose City

City of Pine Forest

West Orange-Cove CISD

The West Orange-Cove Consolidated Independent School District will have two seats available for filing on the Board of Trustees this year.

At-large positions currently held by board members Tony Dallas and Andrew Hayes are open for filing. Interested residents of the school district may contact Bonnie Tegge at 409-882-5500 for more information.



LC-M CISD

The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Consolidated Independent School District will have two seats available for filing starting this week. Seats currently held by Randy McIIwain, Position 1, and Marlene Courmier, Position 3, are open for filing.

Bridge City ISD

Only two seats are up for filing this election year at Bridge City ISD.

Terms are expiring for Trustees Michael C. Johnson, Place 6, and Mark Anderson, Place 7, this year. Interested candidates may contact Jean Magnuson at 409-735-1511 for more information on filing.



Vidor ISD

Residents of the Vidor Independent School District have elected several new members to the school board since 2011, and two of those seats which started the big changeover are up for election this year.

Seats held by Kimberly Crossley and Michael Helms, Position 6 and Position 7, respectively, are open for filing to Vidor ISD residents. Interested candidates by contact Debbie Munoz at 409-951-8714.



Several other local districts, which have elected officials, will hold elections this May as well. These districts hold elections every two years, in even numbered years, and terms are for four years.



Orange County Navigation and Port District

Three positions on the Orange County Navigation and Port District’s board are up for filing this year.

Seats held by Jerry Hughes, at-large, Keith Wallace, Precinct 1, and John Young, Precinct 4 are expiring. Interested candidates may call 409-883-4363 for information.



Orange County Drainage District

Three positions on the Orange County Drainage District’s board are open for filing as terms expire for Bill Dixon Sr., Precinct 1, and Karl Stephenson, Precinct 3, as well as the Director at-large seat held by Brent Peveto.

Orange County Water Control and Improvement Dist. 1

Orange County Water Control and Improvement District 1 has three seats up for election this spring. The at-large seats are currently held by Billy Perkins, Robert Viator and Tim Beard. Call 409-769-2669 for more information.
