HOT tax to help area hotels

ORANGE — Orange County Hotels will be part of a statewide reservation system thanks to Hotel/Motel Tax funding.

The Orange County Economic Development (EDC) is using $8,000 from the funds to pay for the areas hotels to be members of the Hotel Lodging Association.

The Orange County EDC originally requested $2000 for a video which will showcase Orange and can be used as marketing tool to attract businesses to the area.

“I needed to expand the video,” Bobby Fillyaw, Orange County EDC director, said. “The video includes highlights from the Bassmaster event.”

The expansion of the video increased the cost to $2,750.

The Bridge City Historical Society originally was recommended for $4,000 towards the Heritage Festival and $2,000 towards the 4th of July Celebration. The group requested the combining of the funds for the 4th of July Celebration during the March 7 Public Hearing.

The group felt it would be more than they could handle due in the coming year to recent changes within the organization.

The Greater Orange Chamber of Commerce will use the $15,000 to fund a fishing tournament

The final total recommendations is $76,950. All remaining monies will be dedicated to funding the Orange County Convention and Expo Center located on Highway 1442 south of Interstate 10 which is expected to be operational this summer.

Fillyaw said the purpose of the HOT tax funds is for events that will fill the hotels in the area for more than one night.

“Bassmasters filled hotels in Orange, Bridge City and even in Vidor,” Fillyaw said.
