Lighthouse Kidz Kampus Learning Center opens

ORANGE — Gilliam Learning Center reopens with a new name.

The Lighthouse Kidz Kampus Learning Center, 111 Pine Ave., Orange, opened at the location once housing Gilliam Learning Center.

It all started with a Facebook message to Ministers Eric and Trena Arceneaux in February.

“The owner and the manager of Sabine Park Apartment Homes contacted me and told me what they were expecting with the center and if we would be interested in opening one,” Trena Arceneaux said. “We opened November 15 when we were licensed by the state.”

Arceneaux said it took that long to renovate the building to meet code compliance.

The original center was built in 1941 for Gilmer Homes, as the complex was named at the time, by the Housing Authority Orange.

The Arceneaux describe themselves as transplants from Port Arthur who have a great amount of love already for the community of Orange.

“We want to see the community come together and be cohesive,” Arceneaux said. “And that starts with our children.”

Arceneaux also said that the center offers the education they would want available for their own son, 18 months.

“We are a faith based day care,” Arceneaux said. “We already have educators on stand-by as the number of children increase.”

The center is a nondenominational faith.

The center will be able to care for 71 children, 21 which can be under the age of 18 months.

“We want to be a blessing to the families,” Arceneaux said. “We are open to anyone, not just those living in the complex.”

Arceneaux also is looking forward to bridging the old with the new as she is searching for members of the Gilmer family that may still be in the area and to learn more about Gilliam, which the center was named for originally.

“I would like to be able to invite them to the grand opening in January,” Arceneaux said. “We are also in the process of having a historical marker for the center.”

The day care center is open Monday - Friday with before and after school drop offs. The center accepts children from infant to 12 years of age.

An open house grand opening is scheduled for Tuesday, January 14, 2014. The time is to be announced.
