Stark Museum offers summer art classes for children and teens

ORANGE — Registration is open through June 3, 2013, for Art Quest, youth art classes offered by the Stark Museum of Art, located at 712 Green Avenue in Orange, Texas. Classes will be available for students entering grades 1 - 12 and will take place on select dates in June, July and August.

Classes will be taught by Elena Ivanova, Chief Educator; Jennifer Restauri, Educator for Studio and Family Programs; and Hannah Fuller, Education Intern, with assistance from Museum docents.

Art Quest participants will participate in hands-on activities and learn about paintings, sculptures and other works, which are part of the Museum’s collection. Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, with a maximum of 20 participants per class. Advance application is required, and all applications must be fully completed and signed in order to be processed. Applications are currently available for download from the Stark Museum of Art website, www.starkmuseum.org, under the Education tab.

Parents may also pick up an application in person at the Museum’s Information Desk during open hours. Completed applications are due no later than June 3, 2013, by 5 p.m. The fee for each class is $15 per participant for STARK Cultural Venues members at the Family level and above, and $30 per participant for non-members and for members at the Individual, Dual and Couple SCV membership levels.

The summer schedule of classes is as follows.

• Scene at the Stark (For students entering grades 9-12)

June 18, 19 and 20, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

Put yourself in the chair of a storyboard artist and create a sequence for an imaginary movie based on works in the Stark Museum of Art collections.

 

• Opposite Directions (For students entering grades 3-5)

July 9, 10 and 11, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. until noon

Join us as we go on a journey to explore opposites: oil and water, positive and negative, and complementary colors.

 

• Artifactory (For students entering grades 6-8)

July 16, 17 and 18, 2013, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Join a team of young artists to create a collective work of art and then step into the painted scene.

 

• Water, Water Everywhere (For students entering grades 1-2)

July 23, 24 and 25, 2013, from 9 a.m. until noon

Join us on this water-themed adventure! Make sculpture, paint with ice and create take-home art using watercolor.

 

• Giant Tales (For students entering grades 3-5)

August 6, 7 and 8, 2013, from 9 a.m. until noon

Make giant-sized art as you learn about tall tales. Create illustrations, sculptures and more.

 

• Beyond Bugs (For students entering grades 1-2)

August 13, 14 and 15, 2013, from 9 a.m. until noon

They creep, they crawl and they fly. Join us as we search for images of bugs and create our own creepy crawlers.
