CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas —
A South Texas jury has convicted a former police officer in the 2011 fatal shooting of his estranged common-law wife.
Jurors in Corpus Christi convicted ex-Alice police Officer Jose Gonzales III of capital murder. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty so Gonzales received an automatic life prison term after being convicted Thursday.
Judge Angelica Hernandez also sentenced Gonzales to life in prison for his conviction for burglary of a habitation to commit aggravated assault in the same incident. The sentences will be served concurrently.
Investigators say Gonzales on Dec. 12, 2011, attacked Leslie Morin at the home she shared with her mother, who wasn't hurt. He fled with the couple's 8-year-old son before surrendering in Alice.
Authorities have said Morin left Gonzales about two weeks before the shooting.
