Prayers Monday for Native American bones in Texas

PHARR, Texas — Prayers will be offered Monday for some Native American bones found at a South Texas construction site and reburied by police.

The Monitor (http://bit.ly/W5RSzg ) newspaper reported Thursday that the ground-blessing ceremony in Pharr will be done by the Lipan Apache tribe.

Tribal official Robert Soto says the bones are not believed to be from his tribe but his group plans the ceremony because Native Americans feel the ground has been desecrated.

Work to expand a retirement community was stopped when the bones were discovered Feb. 11. Police contacted anthropologists, the Texas Historical Commission and tribal leaders about the bones believed to be several hundred years old.

Soto says police and the company have been accommodating. Police on Wednesday reburied the bones near the original location and an officer said prayers.
