TEXARKANA — A judge has ruled a Texarkana man accused of shooting and killing a Bowie County sheriff's deputy in the basement of the county courthouse in New Boston incompetent to stand trial.
State District Judge Leon Pesek Monday ordered 23-year-old Tucker Strickland confined to a state mental hospital until he's competent to be tried on a capital murder charge for the 2011 slaying of 54-year-old deputy Sherri Jones.
Authorities say Jones was escorting Strickland to a competency hearing on a charge he assaulted his mother when the deputy was overpowered, had her gun taken and was shot in the head. Strickland fled in a county transport van and was captured about 30 minutes later in Arkansas.
Strickland has been held in the Fannin County Jail in Bonham under $3 million bond.
