2 rescued by chopper after SUV swept away in Texas

Associated Press

BUDA, Texas — Emergency personnel in a helicopter hoisted a man and a woman from trees after their SUV was swept away during Central Texas storms and flooding.

Officials with the Buda (BYOO'-duh) Fire Department, about 10 miles south of Austin, say both victims suffered lacerations and the man broke his nose. Capt. Craig Odell says the couple should recover after also being treated for hypothermia following the rescue early Thursday.

The woman lives near Little Bear Creek, which flooded after storms began Wednesday. Their wrecked SUV ended up near a bridge. The man was in one tree and the woman in another, about 150 yards downstream.

A rescuer in a harness reached the victims, who say they'd been in the trees — about 10 feet above the water — for several hours.
