DENVER, Colo — Seven event titles were awarded at this year’s National Western Stock Show Rodeo and three of them have strong ties to Calcasieu Parish in Louisiana.

Casey Martin and Shane Hanchey who both call Sulphur, La., home came into the final performance with a good lead and were able maintain their positions, Martin in steer wrestling and Hanchey in tie-down roping. Bull rider Corey Navarre, came into the finals in fourth place and moved up to win the title here. Navarre, lives in Weatherford, Okla., but grew up in Sulphur and will always call that home as well.

Martin was the big money winner of the whole rodeo earning $15,097 for a total time of 11.6 seconds on three steers. While he was competing, Hanchey was sitting on the back of the bucking chutes cheering for his close friend. Then it was Martin’s turn to watch Hanchey rope a calf in 8.9-seconds giving him the win with a total time of 24.5 seconds. Hanchey’s earnings in the Denver Coliseum were $11,299.

“We do feed off of each other,” Hanchey said. “I’m his biggest fan. I see how hard he works and we are always pulling for each other.”

Navarre was one of six men to ride all three of his bulls. He placed deep in round one and was part of a three-way tie for second in the finals. His total of 247 points was just two points ahead of Trevor Kastner, from Ardmore, Okla. Navarre, who is a four-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier could be on his way to his fifth if he continues to ride like he did here.

Former National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association champion bareback rider Ty Breuer showed fans he is ready for the next step in his career. Breuer,  who won that title in 2009,  had to take some time off because he broke the same leg twice but is healthy now and planning to hit the circuit full-time. He had 246 points to win $12,336.

Cody Wright’s rodeo resume just got longer with his first win here. The two-time world champion earned his title with 250 points and collected $8,542. Jane Melby, originally from Backus, Minn., now living in Burneyville, Okla., dominated the barrel racing on her new horse, First Down Perks. They had a total time of 45.96 seconds winning $10,299.

In the team roping it was a happy birthday for Nick Sartain from Dover, Okla. He celebrated with his new partner eight-time world champion heeler Rich Skelton from Llano, Texas by adding to their buckle collection. Skelton previously won this rodeo roping with Speed Williams who he also won his world championships with. Sartain has a heading world title of his own, but this is his first Denver championship. They had a total time of 14.5 seconds on three steers to win $8,796.
