Thousands lose electricity during Texas storms

LUBBOCK — Storms in north and west parts of Texas packing winds topping 80 mph have left behind hail and power outages but no immediate reports of anyone hurt.

Oncor (ON'-kor) had nearly 30,000 customers without power Thursday — mainly in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The National Weather Service says the Lubbock area had 82 mph winds. Forecaster Gary Skwira (SKWER'-uh) says winds of 84 mph were reported near Wolfforth. Friona (free-OHN'-uh) had hail the size of baseballs.

Part of the roof of Lubbock Heart Hospital was blown off. Patients were moved to other parts of the hospital.

Several hundred Lubbock Power & Light customers lost electricity. Xcel Energy customers in southeastern New Mexico and the Texas South Plains also had outages — including nearly 1,200 Thursday in Lubbock.
