ORANGE — “But this I say, he whom sows sparingly shall reap also sparingly, and he which sows bountifully shall reap also bountifully.”(2 Corinthians 9:6) This principle is familiar to Christian and non-Christian alike. What are we harvesting? If we’re going to change the harvest of our community we must begin to change our process of propagation. Any male can prep and plant, but for a man, prepping and planting is just the beginning. Our children (seeds) need their daddies in their life. One in four children in the United States is being raised by a single parent. “According to Custodial Mothers and Fathers and Their Child Support: 2007, released by the U.S. Census Bureau in November, 2009, there are approximately 13.7 million single parents in the United States today, and those parents are responsible for raising 21.8 million children, approximately 26% of children under 21 in the U.S. today.” (Single Parent Statistics by Jennifer Wolf, About.com Guide) Approximately 84% of custodial parents are mothers, and 16% of custodial parents are fathers. Mothers who are custodial parents 45% are either divorced or separated, 34.2% have never been married, 19% are married in most cases, these numbers represent women who have remarried and 1.7% are widowed. These numbers are appalling. More disturbing is that these percentages are very close to the number of males who planted but are not propagating. There are men who are stepping up and cultivating their seeds. Out of all the fathers who are custodial parents 57.8% are divorced or separated, 20.9% have never married, 20% are currently married in most cases, these numbers represent men who have remarried and fewer than 1% are widowed. (Single Parent Statistics By Jennifer Wolf, About.com Guide) Although we do have men stepping up, 57.8% is not enough. These are just the numbers of men who have custody of their seed. Whether custodial or not there is still a great need for men cultivate their seed. Tilling the soil of our seed helps them to grow and achieve healthy lives. Is our seed growing up around weeds? Are thugs and thorns strangling the success of our sons? Is drama and drugs destroying the dreams and destiny of our daughters? What type of cultivating are we doing? While the earth remains seedtime and harvest shall not cease. Seed time and harvest time. My brother what are you sowing? Harvest time will tell.
