Can we be counted on?

ORANGE —

As part of their TV logo, a Beaumont TV station announces, “You can count on us!” I think they want us to believe we can count on them for the best in local and national news programming and entertainment. Whether or not they live up to their pronouncement is left up to each individual or family to decide.

The larger issue involves each of us personally. It is truly an individual matter. The important question is, can people count on us? What can they count on us for? I believe one of the sweetest affirmations one can hear is: “You can always count on (insert a name). . .” This is just another way of saying, “so ‘n so is faithful . . . True to their word . . . Dependable . . . You can count on them to tell the truth.”

Banks lend money anticipating that borrowers can be counted on to make monthly payments. Children count on their parents to provide food, clothing and shelter. A lack of faithfulness both inside and outside the Church creates confusion and chaos.

Although unfaithfulness may characterize a Christless society, faithfulness is the hallmark of the Church.

The reference from Revelation is worthy of more consideration than can be allowed in our limited space. It is made even more so by its context. Jesus is given the designation as “the Amen, the Faithful and True witness” as a direct contrast to the church in the city of Laodicea that is notoriously known as being unfaithful.

A Bible scholar says, “The phrase, ‘Faithful and True Witness,’ may be a further amplification of ‘the Amen.’ Presenting the trustworthiness of Christ in sharp contrast to the unfaithfulness of the Laodicean church. Christ’s undeviating fidelity and unswerving loyalty to God uniquely qualify Him to speak. He can witness of God because He came from God. His word is reliable because He is the Truth -- the Amen.”

As in every other case, Christ is the perfect model for the kind of faithfulness we may expect His Holy Spirit to produce in the life of every believer.
