2 arrested for synthetic marijuana in traffic stop

ORANGEFIELD — Law enforcement agents arrested two men for possession of synthetic marijuana following a traffic stop Thursday.

Detectives with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Special Services Division arrested Scott Shaunesey and Christopher Briggs, both of Orange, following a traffic stop in Orangefield.

According to a press release, detectives were on patrol near Orangefield High School on FM 105 shortly before 11:15 a.m., Thursday, when they “observed the driver of a black Chevrolet truck commit a traffic violation” and conducted a traffic stop.

The truck, which was driven by Shaunesey, 31, pulled into the parking lot of a nearby convenience store. Detectives approached the vehicle and observed “a synthetic marijuana cigarette” on the center console of the truck. Both Shaunesey and Briggs, 29, were placed into custody for possession of a controlled substance in a drug free zone, which is a felony.

A search of the truck led to the discovery of approximately 23 grams of methamphetamine, a small amount of Ecstasy, and several alprazolam tablets.

After both men were transported to the Orange County Jail, authorities discovered Briggs has three felony outstanding warrants as well. Two of the warrants are for tampering with a government document and the other is unauthorized use of a vehicle. Each warrant has a bond of $25,000 bond, which totals $75,000.

Bond has not been set for the new charges for either man, as of press time. Both men remain in custody at the Orange County Jail.

On Feb. 13, Shaunesey and another man were arrested on a similar felony charge following a traffic stop, again near Orangefield High School, led to the discovery of approximately 14 grams of methamphetamines hidden inside the vehicle and a search of the area located an object which authorities had seen being thrown from the vehicle.

Detectives later located the object and determined it to be a methamphetamine pipe. Detectives also found synthetic marijuana, drug paraphernalia items and two pellet pistols in the truck during that incident.
