ORANGE — Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt is considering options for replacing the 2007 transportation van that was involved in a wreck on May 31, 2012 in Lufkin.
The two deputies were uninjured and the three inmates were transported to the hospital, treated and released.
The van was the only transport van for Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
“We are looking at options for the near future,” Merritt said. “We will use the pay-out from the insurance towards the van.”
The van will need to have modifications to transport prisoners for the safety of the prisoners and the deputies.
Currently, the department is using law enforcement vehicles to transport prisoners and resorted to using two vehicles to safely and securely transport the number of prisoners.
“We are looking at the least expensive model,” Merritt said. “It is more economical to have our mechanic install the cage and other modifications from the totaled van.”
The vehicle must be a 15-passenger van due to the modifications and the number of prisoners to be transported at times.
