Learning to make their 'mark'

LITTLE CYPRESS — Earlier in the semester, at Little Cypress Elementary School, Brenda Jones’ third graders participated in Dot Day with students all over the world.

International Dot Day is named for the book “The Dot,” written by Peter H. Reynolds. The book is about a little girl who feels that she is not creative and cannot “make her mark” in the world. A teacher shows her that she is more creative than she thinks. Therefore, International Dot Day is a day to celebrate creativity.

According to Ms. Jones, “I chose to participate by using our Samsung tablets and an app called ColAR Mix. The app ( includes a website that allows you to print coloring pages.”

ColAR Mix participated by creating a Dot Day coloring page. The “AR” in ColAR Mix stands for Augmented Reality. Augmented Reality allows you to add layers to images on the tablet. You can scan a picture and more information becomes available.

In this case, the dot becomes 3-dimensional and the students feel as though they can reach out and touch their creation.

“We really had a lot of fun,” said Jones.
