Reading and Declamation

ORANGE — The Orange County Finals of the 107th Miriam Lutcher Stark Contest in Reading and Declamation were held Sunday at the Lutcher Theater in Orange. Each Orange County school district had two representatives participate.

The winners, pictured from left, are Chaz Romero, Orangefield High School, placed second in Declamation for “Eulogy for Robert F. Kennedy” by Edward Kennedy; Bruce Wright, Bridge City High School, placed first in Interpretive Readings for “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce; Dallin Packard, Vidor High School, placed second in Interpretive Readings with “The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne; and Jessica Dickerson, LC-M High School, won first place in the Declamation category for “The Morality of Birth Control” by Margaret Sanger.

First place winners were awarded $5,000 scholarships, and second place winners were awarded $2,500 scholarships.
