Applications for scholarship and writing contest now being accepted

ORANGE — The local VFW scholarship contest and writing contest for area students is now accepting entries.

The Orange Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 275 and The Ladies Auxiliary are now accepting applications for the Voice of Democracy Audio Essay Scholarship Contest for high school-age students, as well as entries for the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest for students in sixth through eighth grades.

Local awards for the scholarship contest are prizes of $300, $200 and $100. Cash prizes for the Patriot’s Pen contest are $150, $100, $75 and $50 each.

All requirements and materials are now available at local schools with the corresponding grade levels.

The VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary are seeking nominations for the Outstanding Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year. Awards will be presented to three area teachers in the following grade levels: Kindergarten through fifth grade, sixth through eighth grade, and ninth through twelfth grade.

The deadline for all contest entries is Friday, Nov. 1, 2013. Late entries will not be accepted.

First place winners in the Voice of Democracy, Patriot’s Pen and Teacher of the Year contests will advance to the District level and compete for additional awards. Subsequent winners will then advance to the State level and the National level for larger prizes.
