Garland Sims

Garland Sims — On July 17th Garland passed away in his home of over 20 years Fairhope, Al. at the age of 86.

He accomplished so much as a resident of fairhope,Al. He was the founder and creator of THE PURPLE MARTIN RIVIERA which van be seen near the FH Pier and along Magnolia beach park.(go to than the webcam to see his legacy. He served as very active citizen volunteer for the City Of Fairhope. He was a member of the FH environmental Advisory Board. Garland also served as one of the bay water quality monitors(a Dauphin Island Sea Lab volunteer water testing program).The community as whole will continue to benefit from Garlands selfless dedication of his adamant protection of our coastal area. There wasn't a day that went by that Garland and Scottie didn't go to the fairhope pier to watch the purple martins and those gorgeous sunsets that he photographed.

 Garland served his country America where was a retired U.S. Air Force. After his military service Garland flew for a small airline company which help transport doctors from Galveston, Texas to the Galveston shipyard explosion incident in 1947( the largest industrial accident in U.S. history. Garland served as a Commander at the local American legion. His favorite motto was "America Love It or Leave it"

He also was employed by Eddie Rickenbacker in the start up of Eastern Airlines. In 1948 he started working at Dupont in Sabine, Texas where he retired in 1978 as systems manager.

Garland is proceeded in death by his forever love and wife of 65 years(whom passed away Feb 6 of this year) and his sister Nancy. He is survived by his brother Clarence and two sisters Mittie and Shirley and numerous nieces and nephews. His long-time caregiver and companion Hedi. and many friends from the state of Texas and Fairhope AL.
