Eugene Ford

ORANGE — Eugene Ford, Jr., 89, passed away on April 15, 2013 in Port Arthur, TX at Cypress Glen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born to Eugene and Lollie Marie Ford in El Paso, TX. Eugene graduated from Douglas High School in El Paso, TX and later graduated in 1945 from Prairie View A&M University, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1951, he obtained a master’s degree in Educational Counseling. He began his teaching career at Lincoln High School with the Port Arthur ISD and continued for 18 years. He touched the lives of many young men and was mentor to several, taking time to drive them to Prairie View A&M University to gain admission. He enjoyed helping young people pursue their dream and continue their careers through higher education.

In 1968, he made a career choice and was employed with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (FHA) in Houston, TX, where he was a valued employee for 20 years. Later, he came out of retirement to work several years for the City of Orange Housing Authority.

Still living in Port Arthur and commuting to Houston daily, he found time to serve our community in many capacities. Mr. Ford was elected to Port Arthur I.S.D. School Board and served as Trustee and Secretary (1979-2982), and Pleasure Island Commissioner (1990-1997). He has received numerous awards and recognitions for services to our community.

He was also an architect and is the designer of several local churches as well as private homes.

Known affectionately as “Uncle Gene”, Hoss, Gungadeen, Mr. Ford or just Eugene, he has now joined his parents Eugene and Lollie Marie Ford, twin sisters Leander Garnett and Leona Ford Washington and his brother Roland (Helen) Ford. He leaves the following persons to sorrowfully cherish his memory- his wife of 65 years, Opal Irene; children Donald Ford, Beaumont, TX; Wanda (Don) Wesson, Temple, TX; Craig (Sheryl) Ford, Houston, TX; and Sandra Gail Ford (Lawrence Patrick) Castille. Also carrying his legacy for generations to come are 14 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, numerous nephews, nieces, friends, and special students he mentored through the years who shared his life and love.

Services will be Saturday, April 20 at Rock Island Missionary Baptist Church in Port Arthur. Visitation services are from 12 noon-2:00 p.m. and funeral services will follow.
