Linda Gale Brown Colbert

ORANGE — Linda Gale Brown Colbert was born in Orange, Texas on Nov. 2, 1951 to Hazel Lee Reedom and the late Luther Edward Brown.

Linda died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012 at St. Lukes Hospital in Houston, Texas.

Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012 at Starlight Church of God in Christ, 2800 Bob Hall Road. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church under the direction of Colonial Memorial Chapel.

Linda received her education and graduated in 1970 from Lutcher Stark High School. As a student, Linda was president of the National Junior Honor Society, cheerleading captain for two years and became the first Ms. Orange Beauty Pageant winner. She furthered her education by attending Texas Southern University in Houston.

In her early working years Linda was a student teacher at Lorena Oates and Bancroft Elementary Schools. Linda began her professional career as a secretary at Programs for Human Services in 1977, where she worked until 1984. She then began a 17 year tenure at the Planning Commission where she rose to prominence as the first executive director of the newly formed Texas Workforce Development Board. Linda served in this capacity from 2001 until her retirement in 2008. She was responsible for the creation of numerous programs and job training that helped countless people that otherwise may not have been afforded the opportunity. Many of whom were fortunate enough to began their own businesses under her tutelage. Several major accolades were bestowed upon Linda during her 35 years in the private sector.

Linda, a lifetime member of the Starlight Church of God in Christ, accepted the Lord Jesus as her personal Savior in 1979. A gifted and multi-talented woman of God, her illustrious calling culminated in a wide array of positions and titles within COGIC both locally and statewide. Evangelist Missionary Colbert served as the minister of music at Starlight for 26 years where she encouraged and trained others how to hone their craft in vocal instruction and choral directing. She also worked faithfully as assistant state minister of music with Mrs. Sandra Walker as well as being the director of Urban Initiatives for Texas Southeast No. 1. Additional titles at Starlight included chairman of the finance committee, trustee boardmember, sanctuary building committee coordinator, vice president of the pastor’s aide committee and pastor and wife appreciation committee. She was also co-leader of care team No. 7 and a member of the women’s department board.
