Chip Carroll

ORANGE — Chip Carroll departed this life on October 11, 2013. Born June 2, 1947, Chip was proudly named Charles Bryant Carroll III, and given his nickname to distinguish him from his father and grandfather. He attended Port Neches Groves High School where he marched with the Indian Band playing his beloved cornet. Chip developed a lifelong love of music and often pulled that old horn out of his closet to play along to some favorite march or jazz piece. After attending the University of Texas for a year, Chip acquired his B.S. in Biology and M.S. in Education from Lamar, and began his teaching career at old Stark High School. He loved teaching science and was proud to say that he taught kids more than facts: he taught them to think. Chip then gained his Counselor’s certificate and found another calling: helping his students surmount their personal challenges and become confident adults.

Outside of school, Chip had three obsessions: Corsairs, Corvettes, and cameras. Because his dad had been a fighter pilot in the Pacific Theater, Chip admired the F-4U Corsair most, but could glance up at a passing plane at 10,000 feet, and accurately identify it. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of war birds and joyously regaled anyone in earshot with all he knew. He had the same passion for cars, especially the Corvette; again, with a split second view of a speeding car, Chip could tell you the year, make, and model of virtually any vehicle. His first prized possession was a Candy Apple Red 1973 Stingray, and his last was a 2003 50th Anniversary Edition he bought to celebrate his retirement; he said that everybody knew that all Corvettes were red. Chip was also a great old-school photographer, complete with film and chemicals and f-stops. He shot landscapes for fun, as well as friends’ weddings, senior pictures, and junior high dance photos, generally charging nothing for his service, as well as absorbing costs for anyone who couldn’t pay.

Chip Carroll was a brilliant, talented man who would try to, and usually succeed in fixing, anything for anyone, as he described himself, “a jack of all trades, but a master of none”. Neighbors, relatives, and friends are already lamenting the loss of their on-call handyman who always delivered his best advice and expertise with a smile.

Chip is survived by his wife, Cat Carroll; his parents, Joyce and Charles Carroll; sister and brother-in-law, Lisa and J.A. Miller; nieces, Heather and Jade Miller; nephew, Austin Miller; sister-in-law, Betsy Fleming; mother-in-law, Marie Fondren; brother-in-law, Tim Fondren; step-in-laws, Herta Fondren, Debbie Border, and Elizabeth Gaddis; as well as numerous friends, neighbors, colleagues, and students.

Chip Carroll is, was, and always will be beloved, and will be sorely missed.

A memorial service for Mr. Carroll will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 26, 2013, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. His committal was held at Broussard’s Crematorium, Beaumont.

In lieu of flowers, please contribute to a scholarship fund set up in Mr. Carroll’s name through Edward Jones. Alternately, checks may be sent to C.B. Carroll III Scholarship, 9295 Lombard, Beaumont, Texas 77707.
